BMW recommends regular gas for winter??? Any truth about that??

Read the Wiki closer... 91 AKI is 91 (R+M)/2. I think you're thinking of 91 RON = ~87 (R+M)/2. So when BMW states to use 91 AKI in the US they're talking our measure of octane not what's used in the EU. Your best bet is to use 93 Octane fuel in the US. It's about equal to the EU's 97 RON fuel.

Octane number is a measure of how well the fuel mixture resists knock; it has nothing to do with how complete it burns or how much deposit it leave.

Nonetheless oil companies often put more detergent additives in higher octane fuel, advertise it as engine cleaning fuel, to encourage you to buy it and give them more profit.
