Just picked up a nice used set of cross bars and before I take the plunge and buy the BMW bike carrier I wanted to see if any of the other rails might fit this one. Tried the Thule one I use for my mountain bike and no go, the BMW bars are too thick. Has anyone managed to retrofit their rails to fit the BMW crossbars?

Sean

PS It's funny the amount of people at work who think I am committing some form of sacrilege putting my bike on top of the car.......

I use the Yakima cobra I think it's called. It's a great rack and VERY easy to get the bike in and out of. To attach it I used the Yakima "Mighty Mounts" which are the adapters for the factory bars. I got it all at REI. Much better than the OEM bike racks.

If you already have the Thule rack, I believe they also sell an adapter for the factory bars at REI.

Last I checked Thule doesn't make a rack system for the e60. Wish they did...all I need are the feet adapters....i've got everything else from my old Maxima Thule set-up

I managed to use the xadapt 9 set from Thule, a few washers and a Thule Big Mouth rack to mount the car. Next step is take the mounts off the Big Mouth and attach them to the Velo Vise mount and see if that works.
