I thank everyone for your frank opinions, BMW owners really are a cool bunch. I guess the answers though are not what I wanted to hear but the truth is the truth. I knew there was a problem when I literally knew the service guy by his first name when I owned my e39 and many bimmers before that, I really don't want to deal with that hassle again. Nevertheless I just miss BMWs too much. I will explore warranty both CPO and third party like auto one. Here in Canada we have fewer to warranty choices.

Merry Xmas !!

My car is due to go in the shop for an air bag fault light... but if I really think about it the car is in the shop maybe two or three times a year. One of those times being the annual serivce where something that has been bugging me also gets fixed. I always get a nice loaner BMW, to try out (last time a 335i) and everything has been covered under the warranty. When I had my Acura they wanted the oil changed every 3k miles so I was in there as much as I am my BMW dealer just for regular maintenance so the impact on my time has been the same.

The key is paying for repairs on an expensive German car. I am just barley still under my new car warranty and have CPO warranty after that. If I was trading an 06 TL I woul dwant and 05 530, not 04, with a CPO warranty...

If you've got the BMW "bug" again (and who around here does NOT???) then I say go for it, but ONLY if it has a warranty! Or as you found out with your 2000 M5 it will rip your heart out through your wallet! Good Luck with your decision!

You can't get a car CPO'd. You can only purchase a CPO vehicle from a BMW dealership.
They (the current owners) can do the original owner extension (I forget the actual name now). However the rule is that you have to keep the car at least 6 months after purchasing it I believe (not sure how they check). Even so, that warranty (similar to the CPO warranty) does not cover things like the NAV. There are better warranties out there.

That said... If I was concerned about reliability, I would stay very far away from a 2004 5-series. Not known for its reliability.

Thats why I wouldn't consider and 04, the 05 is finicky enough...

I'd suggest go for the 530. Much more fun than the alternative. if you can't get it CPO, you should be able to at least buy the extended warranty for piece of mind. The M5 would be a lot more expensive to repair and maintain than the 530 because of its racing quality parts.....

Good luck...

sorry I guess should have explained that better. The current owners of the 530i are having trouble with iDrive on a daily basis. For me being a tech geek
Im loving the thought of using it. I have played with it in my brother in laws 06 330i and I liked it.

Why? They've obviously had the car for a while - iDrive doesn't require more than an hour to learn and if the "son and parents" are regular drivers of the car, what would be the big deal?

No matter how many times I read about people having trouble with Idrive I still cannot make myself believe that people can still be this clueless in this day and age, especially with a simple device as I drive. The average cell phone has more bells and whistles than an Idrive.

I've had my 04 525i for only 6 months now, but I've hadn't one issue with it, other than the ones I made up so the dealership would update my iDrive . The car has been a dream to own and drive. Maybe I'm lucky but I don't see the same issues others are complaining about.

I drive is very simple. Navigation may take an hour to get used to, but very simple. I am curious as to how the 2004 idrive was. I know that in my 2008 and 2009 cars, it is very simple.

I could see where someone in their 70s would find it difficult as they may not be as techonogically savvy, but for the majority Idrive is a breeze. Can anyone say voice recognition and bluetooth?
