If you're going up steep hills etc. or suffer from lack of tracktion on short stretches of road, the Norwegian invention AutoSock provides an ingenious solution. Mounting this sock is supposedly very easy and requires less skill than applying chains.

I tried to get up a small hill in the Lake District in my 530d It was icy and it kept slipping. It couldn't make it. Had to turn it around. Not sure if it is anything to do with the autobox. Not tried it in snow but I guess winters would be essential.

I only got my car in march so I assumed snowtires wouldn't be a must but hell!!!

driving on 245 tires I got stuck just everywhere, getting off at traffic lights got me many beeps and honks from cars assuming I didn't see the green light

I takes like 5 seconds to just get moving in snow

but then, I went drifting on a wide road and that was so much fun
sometimes you just can't feel the traction control since it's sooooooo smooth

conclusion: next year I'm gonna buy some winter tires

Also have the Continental Wintersports 17" setup, this winter season went by with no problem. Always safe and confident.
