My Ride: bmw e60 545 2004
Question bmw e60 545 electrical demons

I have a e60 545 2004 and it has been sitting for about 9 months, finally found time to work on it again and changed the alternator gasket. The problem is that after all this time with the battery hooked up it was very dead, replaced it with a new one and now the car starts but shows no rpm gauge and every light availabe is showing, transmission fault, dynamic drive fault, airbag fault and so on. i have checked all of the fuses and scanned it for codes and there are alot of codes, most stating a over/under voltage. i wrote down the ones i got from one module after clearing the inactive ones, they are

my question is what could couse all of these faults to come on after this work?, as the car was fine before the gasket failed and went into the garage.

Did you buy the same exact battery or different one. Was the battery coded properly.

bought the same battery that was in it, 115AH. how do you code a battery? does the car need to know when the battery is changed ?

Everything you do needs to be coded unless you put air or fuel in the car. You just need to reset it telling the car has a new battery so it knows how to charge it. Google it and you'll find ways. None of them which are free.

While it is true that a new battery should be coded to the vehicle, I have a very difficult time seeing how it would cause the problems listed. I have seen countless E60's and E90's where people have not coded their batteries and everything is fine. Perhaps you get slightly shorter life out of the battery. When I bought my 10 year old E61 I replaced the battery and looking in ISTA where it shows the mileages for each battery registration there were none on my car, so it's battery was probably replaced 2 or 3 times before I got it without this service being performed.

Have you owned a BMW before this one. There are certain steps you take to troubleshoot these cars and from what you said it didn't happen until after the battery was changed. The only suggestion I will give you at this point is do a reset and make sure your battery is fully charged record the errors and erase the codes to see if they come back.

Yes, i have owned a few bmw before this one, was hoping that maybe someone recognised the symptoms to make my life a little easier but i think i have found the problem, here are pics of the IVM. 1 pin is bent and 1 missing. I am ordering a new one from bmw and new pins for the connector, hopefully this fixes og.

I'm wondering how this happened. After 9 months of sitting and you changing the battery the IVM has a bent and missing pin. Someone previously did work on the car and had no clue what they were doing. Probably changing the ebox fan and didn't realized the IVM didn't have to be disconnected. The IVM would have been next to last on my troubleshooting list only to look to see if there was water damage not damaged pins. Did it not have issues with the electrical system before sitting. It should have.
