iDrive hard to use??? I dont get it.

Lets assume it is hard, the 5 series has a backup system - voice control. Works like a dream, no training, and copes with aussie assents.

it's not hard, but sometimes it's very slow and may take 5-7 seconds to respond. Searching the navigation is not that easy. Sometimes it's not easy to lookup a place using the search feature. the categories make it harder for you to narrow down your search. and sometimes the search results do not include the place that you're looking for, although it's the closest.

no button on the steering wheel.
this will not happen, you hand will touch it when turning the wheel.
The iDrive is a must cos with so much IT stuff around in this world you need som thing to control it.

... makes me fall asleep while waiting for the request for next command. How is it possible to make such a slow system? Probably powered by glue instead of a micro chip.

Wouldn't the lack of tactile feedback make it more difficult for automotive applications? I agree that the multi-touch interface is nice for certain applications or devices but I'm not convinced that putting one in a car would be a step forward...

It's certainly a step beyond what most people would be comfortable using - even now with the iPhone and iPod Touch units in the mainstream.

I'd like to be able to use gestures and chords on a 4"x4" pad where the wheel is... You'd need to memorize a set of shortcut commands, but it has the potential to be as direct and speedy as using one of the pinpoint voice commands. Maybe someday...

im so sick of reading reviews on BMW and reading about how great the car is but how bad the idrive is. thats the first question people ask me about my car, "hows the idrive heard it sucks." is it really that confusing? I think i learned how to use it by the time i got my car home from the dealer!

SERIOUSLY!!!! I'm starting to not bother to read some the reviews because they still complain about the iDrive... when I get to that sentence it just ticks me off and I close the magazine and not even bother finishing the article... IF they cant even fairly judge iDrive I dont think they can fairly judge the cars...

I forget which one but just recently reading Automobile, MotorTrend, Car and Driver or one of those car magazines that I subscribe to comparing the M3 with the C63 and the RS4 they say that BMW was good blah blah blah and started to complain about the iDrive... I just closed it and stopped reading...
