AH me2!!
I do that all the time plus many more others.
i can wash my car at 3am even after a long day's work, or clean my wheels anytime of the day.
i cannot sleep if i know my car sleeping in my garage does not have a full tank (sleeping hungry-poor baby).

some of my buddies and neighbour:
detailing their BMW takes no less than 3 full days. never has the car not been hand washed plus another 3 layers of caruba.

can wake up in the middle of the night to check tire pressure.

will change wheels themselves nightly according to next day's weather report.

the single bmw takes up both spaces in the garage (parked in the middle) to make room for 2 red carpets on each side of car. entire garage lit with daylight balance HMI lighting.

no limits in spending for car care acessories, that including $250+ on a can of wax.

has a surround sound home theatre and plasma screen installed in garage with computer controlled temperature plus insulation, to enable more times spent with his car indoors.

new project of a friend:
to dig out a part of his garage to ease hand washing the car indoors. water goes through the mesh floor.
call that crazy? NEVER. its passion.
new ideas for my coming renovation

Znod, I don't either. He must have changed it.
yep he changed as Lomag asked him,

I do not care what people think, then do not wear a nice watch, suits etc BS sorry.

It is true that we have the so called "BMW driver attitude" but it is not the fault of the brand, we buy it as it it is a fast car and nice most of the people are just jellous they cannot afford it, or cud but did not buy it, their fault.

I am sometimes in a hurry and have to push a bit, so I see they say look the guy with the big balck BMW, yeah sometimes would need a panzer here

In Poland BMW had a huge image problem as it was perceived as a mafia car and as a prime target for car thieves. 5 years ago neither myself nor any of my friends would be seen dead in a beemer (or Merc come to that, Audi was borderline) even though the dynamic qualities of the cars were uncontestable.

This has now changed insofar that the new BMW's are perceived as OK and in a group of say 20 close friends there are 3 E60's and a 7 Series. However once these cars age beyond about 8 years they slip into a grey zone of irregular maintenance, amateur body repairs, crass alloys, cheap fibreglass body adornments and donuts at shopping mall parking lots at 2 a.m.

I'm enjoying my first BMW but have always had more enthusiasm about my Miata. Both of these cars get attention in Poland and while the beemer definitely pisses off a lot of people and you can see they're thinking "rich bastard" when they look at you the Miata generally gets smiles.

This is an over-simplification so I hope no one takes this personally, but BMWs are like Rolexes.
They're expensive enough to have snob appeal. But they're cheap enough to be attainable for most ppl.

On one side, you have enthusiasts who are really into its history, engineering, etc.
(They swear by their E30 M3s, 2002s, James Bond No Date Submariners, COMEX SeaDwellers, or at least recognize why these models are important)

On the other hand, you have yuppies who are into these brands only because they think its "nice". They buy these things just cause they see their friends with one, want to show off, think they're supposed to get one because of the money they make and to keep up with the Jones'.
(They swear by the newest and shiniest models only, think old models are junk)

Group #1 has all the passion, but are the minority these days.
Group #2 is superficial, but are the majority these days.

What you're describing is how the general public only knows of group #2. They don't recognize that there's actually passionate enthusiasts out there who aren't snobs and who don't buy these models just cause they're "nice".
I agree and I don't care what others think it's my life and my money

Thanks Berlin.BMER and ats77.

I've certainly heard of a Mazda MX5. Although I've never driven one, every report I've seen or read on them always uses the word 'fun'.

I only call it a Miata because most Americans have no clue what an MX-5 is

I certainly have fun in it:

and in case anyone asks that is NOT a Ferrari badge on the nose...

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets. First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Default

I've been driving these things since 1971, when people thought BMW stood for British Motor Works, and others asked how to pronounced BMW (Bum-wa?). I have seen the public perception of them change from "sports sedan" to whatever it is now--most dramatically during and following the 80s. That was the time period when money and glamor and "prestige brands/logos" really got drilled into us by the media. It was also about that time that BMW introduced their signature phrase "The Ultimate Driving Machine" which I suspect was not merely coincidental.

It's ironic but I don't ever think, much less worry, about attitude perception, except when confronted by some bully in a (usually jackked-up) pickup truck who intentioinally tries to intimidate me through stupid aggressive driving. I generally ignore them, or simply blow them away if I have the opportunity.

I would say that nowadays, I almost have to educate people about the car's design and benefits, as snob-appeal and pretention have really raised this brand to its current sales heights. I can't fight it, I just try to educate anyone who asks (or makes a stupid comment) and is willing to listen.

I continue to be amazed by the brand slaves who have no idea what it is they are buying. Once during a concert, I handed a pair of Leica mini-binoculars to nearby kid who held them to his eyes, them ripped them away and stared at them in disbelief: "Wow, these really are amazing; so they really are worth the money for that red dot!" Same deal with the roundel.

Cheers,
Ray Hull
