When you press SOS button, is it suppose to call BMW Assist or 911?

I think my car was programmed to call BMW Assist before the software upgrade. After the upgrade, SOS button calls 911. I'm not really sure now.

From CIP 13 to 16 it calls BMW Assist. An operator come on the phone and knows your location and asks you what you need. Now if, God forbid, your airbags are deployed then 911 is automatically dialed and BMW gives emergency services the location of the car.

Has your service through BMW lapsed (the free year)? Maybe it dials 911 when you no longer have a paid subscription. Just a random theory.

Hmm... I can still call the BMW Assist via idrive service menu, but SOS button dials 911. My BMW Assist service is active under the one year free plan. Once the car dials 911 via SOS button, the car can not end the call. 911 emergency center from CHP had to terminate the call from their side.

I think the service technician did not activate my BMW Assist properly, when the software was upgraded.

My car did that when I was first activated Assist. Dealer had to replace a faulty TCU which corrected the problem.

Call BMW to see if your BMW Assist was ever activated. If it was not activated by the dealer before, you can probably still get the 1 year free BMW Assist service.

Yep. The FIRST year is free. Even if you had the car for two years allready your first year BMW ASSSIST starts when you activate it, AFAIK.
