I have been extensively searching on the topic of BMW approved tires and have not been able to obtain a list of approved tires. Apparently tires that have been approved by BMW have a star symbol on the tire indicating that is has been approved by BMW. Sometimes even though you may be buying a specific model tire, the tread can change from a BMW approved tire to a non approved tire.

See http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showt....php?p=12334173

My question is how do we obtain these tires? Only through the dealers?

You just buy the size tyre you car came with and normally it will be BMW approved if they fit them as OEM. Continental use a star on the sidewall of the tyre to designate BMW approved and an M for Mercedes(not sure on other makes). TBH though its only an idiot guide as long as the tyre is rated for or above your cars spec and the correct size for your rim you will be ok.

I'm trying to understand why you would want BMW Approved tires on your car if BMW is NOT purchasing them for you?? Do explain!

I'm not sure what you mean by your question. I want to buy BMW approved tires because that what was oem on the car and that is what is recommended by BMW, like I stated, I bought Kumho's and it turns out that my car drives horribly now. BMW will put BMW approved tires on my car if I pay them their ridiculous asking price. Hope this answers your question.

Look at Bridgestones, Goodyear, Mich., Pirelli, Conti, and Dunlops. Any of those will do great on your BMW.

Chances are you got a bad balance when they installed your Kumho. Tell the shop your problem and they should rebalance them for free. Have them do a road force balance if they have the equipment. Otherwise one of the Kumho tires you have could be a bad.

OIC, I just wasn't sure of why. When I replaced my tires on any car in the past, I would get whatever was the best tire available for my car regardless. thanks for the clarification!

Use of "BMW Approved" replacement tires is an important consideration for lease returns. For all others, choice is a personal thing! (Unless you're a Democrat )

Ok Ok - Facts are:

Tire value is price dependent - match the rating treadwear and size and you are good to go. Mich. Bridge. Continental all good. I have Kuhmos on my Z3 with no problem.

So when BMW throws a brick in your face at lease turn in... ask them why they put Japanese NGK spark plugs on a BOSCH ignition system. Think about it, what the heck does BOSCH say to that? and what does BMW say to BOSCH?

If an OEM says meets OEM standards or above we have to start holding the OEM accountable.

On the other side of the fence, you get what you pay for. Kuhmos are less expensive than Mich. Bridge. and Continental.

You bring up an interesting point, I never thought about the spark plugs.

I'm experiencing crazy flat spotting on the Kumho's when the tires get cold. I even experience this when the car is parked only for a few hours. Do you experience flat spots on your Kumho's? You're exactly right when you say "you get what you pay for" hence that's why I will never go cheap on tires ever again!
