I pesonally would take any warranty renewal there is, simply because for any crap, bmw does a sw update. every sw update costs about 150 EUR, and if any parts are damaged during the update, then those parts need to be replaced too. i guess the warranty renewal then pays off automatically...

I will have to have a big think about warranty renewal and the costs associated with that and main dealer servicing...

Just been told today that my 525d needs a new turbo and glow plugs, 43,000 miles and 20 months old !. It was always erratic on boost and now after an initial surge at 2000rpm it dies between 2500rpm & 4500rpm also making a terrible whine.

By the way dealer advises that 525d turbos are on 7-10 days back order so I have a 118d for two weeks :'(

My last E46 320d also had a blown turbo at 58,000 miles.

I would not even consider running a turbo diesel out of warranty.

My turbo sometimes sounds "boomy". Instead of the slight whistle I hear a noise with a much lower tone like something was amiss with the exhaust.

I might be wrong but I have a vague memory of reading that the 530d and 535d have a small electric pump that continues to pump some oil through the turbo after the engine is shut down to avoid the oil baking. But synthetic oil and the lower temperatures of the diesel suggest that you would really need to have been murdering it for the problem to occur.
