Default Blower Fan Won't Turn OFF

Recently purchased '08 550i MSport has a few quirks I'm trying to resolve.
First on the list is the odd hvac blower fan operation:
  • Initially the fan would not turn on
  • At some point the fan turned on and will shift temperature from control panel
  • Fan will not change speed and will not turn off after key off
  • I've swapped the control panel from another E60 with no change
  • Nothing I can see in the iDrive menus are driving this behavior
Could a bad blower resistor (aka final drive) or fan cause this? I'm not finding much out there on this unfortuantely.

Thanks for any help provided!

More than likely it's a resistor issue so should replace the whole assembly. Troubleshooting it with ISTA or INPA would have nailed down the issue for you but at this point the resistor and fan is the only thing left in the equation since you replaced the IHKA already (with a known good one). Did you program the replacement to the vehicle or just swapped it and did you make sure it was the same?

+1. It sounds more like the blower regulator (resistor pack).

I appreciate the replies. I did swap the control with what I believe to be a known good unit from a 535i. I also tried just unplugging the control all together and it generally behaved the same way.

I'm familiar with the regulator/resistor going out and causing a lack of speed control, but I had not come across it never turning off before. I'll add a blower resistor and blower motor to the RockAuto cart and see if this resolves the issue(s).

Yea the only other thing I can think of is a software issue causing the motor to just run unless there's a wiring issue going on. Maybe at the connector having moisture damage.

Just an update to anyone searching this - replacing the blower and resistor solved this issue. Hope that helps.

It better had fixed it. That's what I had done too.

BMW told me they could have just done the resistor pack, but if it wasn't that then they'd have to charge me more to go back in to replace the blower.
