Black Box in Spare tire?
#1
There is a black box about the size of a pack of cigarettes, that is in the spare tire area.
It is placed in the circular styrofoam insert that fits in the spare tire. There is a 3' cable connecting it to the side wall of the spare tire area. The sensor must have gotten wet because there is some considerable corrision inside of it.
Does anyone know the purpose of this "black box" and could it have anything to do with my idrive going black.
I'm afraid water from my snowblower melted and entered the spare tire area and the dealer will blame me
Thanks

Don't know the anser on your question tailrotor1. But I can tell you that I haven't got the black box in the spare tire area (I don't have a spare tire).

My 545 has two white boxes in the plastic spacers below the spare donut tire. I wanted to move them to put in a real spare tire and wheel but was afraid to move them in case they are orientation sensitive eg airbag or DTS control?? Anone know what they do?

The only black module under the spare tire in my father's '05 545i is a PDC module with three connectors on it.
PDC and iDrive are linked in the e60 (in a number of facets... control, display, and probably aural feedback) so it could well be your issue.
How on earth did you get enough water in there to do that? =/

Yes. Our trunk leaked and filled the tire well with water. It shorted out that box, and actually caused an electrical fire. It is the control module for idrive, as well as other things that are related to idrive (radio, seats, steering wheel, etc...).

If the trunk leaked that and anything else that was damaged inside the trunk should be covered under warranty. The dealer doesn't have to know you used a snow blower and covered the trunk with snow. Even so, warranty should cover it. If it makes you feel better, tell the dealer that the car was parked outside in the snow.
Thanks
