Definitely look at both in person. I've had both. Be sure to look at them clean and a little dirty. Metallic black is not as dark, but is a much better dirt color - hides swirls, fingerprints etc. much better than jet black. IMO nothing looks better than a really clean, waxed jet black though.
I agree with Wolverine, black sapphire hides swirls, fingerprint etc., better than Jet Black. If you do not want to have a metallic look, go with Jet Black.

thanks everyone. I was passing by another dealer's lot and had a chance to look at an E60 jet black 530 that someone had traded in for a brand new Infiniti, and with 11K miles there were a number of fairly noticeable scratches and dings, which I thought a bit surprising. The dealer was unaware that one of the run flat was flat (though the iDrive knew it), and consequently the test drive was pretty awful. I think sapphire metallic black will be the way to go for me.

Black Sapphire is absolutely the best way to go. Do look at them both in person. Jet Black in no way looks better than Black Sapphire (dirty or just waxed). They both appear to be "black", even somewhat close up. But when you look at the black sapphire up close, you will notice how awesome it looks. It's subtle and you can see the metalic in it. It's stunning.
Jet black has been on BMWs now for years. My '96 3 series was Jet. Black Sapphire is new though.
