You haven't understood this right!
Oh I think I have.

W is pronounced "V" in German.

eg Weiss in german could be transliterated into English reading & pronunciation as Vice.

Hence the pronunciation of "W" in German cannot be transliterated as "Way" [Weh] but FOR AN ENGLISH SPEAKER is Vay since that is the ENGLISH sound that a German makes saying "W".

BMW is B..M..W. (or the German "Bay Em Vay)

And it's "Porsha" not "Porsh".

That is all.

There is no "W" sound in German which is equivalent to the "W" sound in German, hence the phonetic equivalents have to be written differently.

In fact the English "W" sound cannot be replicated using German pronunciation.

Oh, here's another one, notice: "Ww - Veh"

http://www.learngermanwords.com/lessons/pr...healphabet.html

oh, and another... German pronunciuation: w=v

http://www.omniglot.com/writing/german.htm

Oh... and another "The German letter W generally sounds like the English V." (OK, generally)...

http://www.rcaguilar.com/german/pronunciat...rmn-letters.htm

The point is it may not sound as "V" to a native German speaker, but it sure does to native English speakers. That's why like a bad German accent by English speakers of German (we seem to be great at ignoring umlauts for example), we get a distinctive German accent when listening to Germans speaking English, especially in the area of often pronouncing W as V.

I might be opening a can of worms here, but do you guys call your cars 'bimmers" or "beamers"?

I'm new here. I've always used bimmer, but almost everyone at work uses beamer when talking about BMW cars. I've tried searches on Google and came up with this.

http://www.bimmer5.com/bimmer-beamer-beemer-bmw.htm
and
http://www.bmwccbc.org/misc/tech-and-trivia/bimmer.html

I just wonder which actual owners think is more correct.

thanks,
Personally I never use either . IMHO I think both sound pretentious and very Yuppy ! I simply refer to my car as..... my car !

Cheers
