i thought ?160 or ?330 dollars was quite expensive to add the ipod interface. I fitted it, all they had to do was to enable the cd stacker item in idrive. apparently thats 5 hours work on the programmer, and 1.5 hours labour - which at my dealer is ?93 or approx $200 an hour - just to watch over a programmer!!!

I see many different opinions of what people think should be standard on an E60. That's exactly why it's good that all of these are NOT standard. Some options that are very important to one person, are completely useless to the other.

There are many many car manufacturers and there are hundreds of models to choose from. There is no such thing as 1 set of features fits all, not even for a specific market segment. BMW made choices like any other OEM and I agree with their choices. After all, it's the option list that really generates profit for BMW, not so much the base price of the car.

Here in the Netherlands the E60 comes without the options that are standard in most other countries. We have to pay for cupholders, for HiFi speakers etc etc. The nav pro costs almost €4500. Even though the base price of an E60 is almost double the US base price.

Still it makes much sense: Due to our car taxes (I believe they're the highest in Europe) the car would simply become way too expensive if they gave it many options as standard and nobody would buy one anymore.

The E60 sales are already dropping here, Audi is selling more than twice as many A6s (the only reason I can think of is price, a comparable A6 costs 5000€ less).

options are money makers. Thats why they are offered. Lesser cars come with many features the bmw wants as options. Every cheap euro hatchback has fold down rear seats - an E60 doesnt - thats about ?350 option $700 dollars. This is a useful feature, but not ?350 useful! Probably costs BMW cents to implement at a nice markup.

A car of this qulaity should have good speakers and not cost more money for extras.

One totally pointless waste of time standard item on the 520 in the uk is 'hill start assistant'. Allows the brakes to hold on for a couple seconds so you dont need to use the handbrake on a hill. A lot of E60 will have auto boxes, and the auto has the same affect.

For me, the biggest issue was that my dealer made me pay for floor mats and 1/3 tank of fuel - didnt even get a few gallons as courtesy on a $50,000 purchase - they were invoice items. On the $14,000 fiat i bough my wife months before, these were included. As was fold down rear seats, cupholders, voice control and bluetooth phone capability. A lcoking fuel cap was $20 extra tho!

Fold down rear seats and rear seat airbags should both be standard items not add ons. Safety should be built into each car at this price and type so airbags should be standard.
The fold down seats seem like such a practical necessity that it would just be easier to fit all the cars coming down the line with fold down seats. It might even simplify things to have a few less options and a few more standard items.
I for one do not want fold down rear seats. I don't see any personal need for it and have never had it on any of my 5-er's. I see it as one more place to get rattles and squeaks.

I think the reason for not including airbags on the rear doors is if you have small children. It's not safe since small children can often lean on the doors to sleep -- bad but it happens.

See and I have used them many times. They come in especially handy twice a year when I switch tires/rims.

Biggest rip off are the floor mats at $400. Sometimes they throw those in for free. Sunroof is $3500, but try selling a second hand car without a sunroof! They are now offering a 'Professional Package' for $2,500 which isn't too bad - includes HUD, blue tooth, TV, PDC and larger screen. Ipod comes standard in Australia, as do two front cupholders, Dakota leather, auto transmission, and premium climate control. But then again, they are taxed to the hilt and even a lowly 525i is over $100K on the road. Import taxes, goods and services tax, luxury car tax, dealer delivery fee, registration add thousands of dollars to the drive away price.

$400 floormats! They better be nice! I guess it's all relative depending on the local market. That is, different packages already may contain one element or another and then the customer is left to buy separately what's not.
