I've been musing about my next Bimmer. What would it be? I currently own an X-Drive and love it. I've been intriqued about the diesel for it's efficiency, and of course, who among us wouldn't want to own an "M"?

Today, I came across this: http://pinterest.com/pin/224405993902541127/ that seems to combine all three!

There's also this pretty extensive review: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/02/24/2...-drive-review/

So what do you think? Does the M550d signify the best of three worlds or make too many compromises to be good at all three?

I don't know about owning one but I wouldn't mind test driving it. I wonder what a tune would do to that torque band?

It is a 3.0 liter tri-turbo diesel, I think.

Yep, you're right, just read up on it - 376 hp & 546 torque .

Three turbos? 33% more likely to give problems. I'd so buy a 5.0 litre though.

0-60 in under 5 seconds, and almost 40mpg is a winner in my book. but i thought i read somewhere that the US was not going to get this model.

The torque on the diesels are quite impressive, but the main problem here in the US is the fuel cost is just too high and sucks up any savings you thought you might have had. I had a diesel X5 and the range for average driving was 25 mpg compared to the gas X5 I have now at 19. Highway was a little better though. But the added cost you pay for the engine and then the cost for the more expensive fuel, I would guess end cost for the US consumer is higher and there is really no savings at all... Europe is a quite different, but I see the diesel creeping up rather quickly there too.

Diesel costs now $7.9 per 1 US gallon here.
