The 535i's engine won International Engine of the Year award.
Best New Engine 2008 award did go to the new twin-turbo 2.0 liter diesel engine, found in 123d (200 hp and 400Nm).

Woo Hoo! Go BMW!
What happened to Porsche?
What happened to Porsche?

In 1997, the Toyota Supra Turbo ran 5.3 to the 60 mph and a 1/4 mile of 13.7 at 105 mph. And it got 18/24 mpg, 320 HP at 5600 rpm, 315 torque at 4000 rpm weighs in at 3505 lbs. All Stock.
So in 10 years time, what so innovative with the I6 turbo? Better highway mileage?

Here's where I don't think BMW is that innovative. I think it's the cat wagging it's tail.

As an owner of a 535i I almost started to argue with you....then I realized...I can't. The Supra was waaayy before it's time. To me the 535i is the perfect automobile with a nice mix of everything I want in a car. But in terms of innovation for it's time it will be hard for anything to beat the Supra.

Nissan was putting up similar numbers even earlier than that.
The Skyline GTR (early 90's) was a TT-I6.

There's actually a pretty major typo in the text. The 997 Turbo engine delivers around 480 bhp, not 420 as stated. The GT2 turns the dial up to 11 to get 530 bhp, again from a 3.6 litre powerplant.

The 996 GT2 was ahead of it's time too in terms of supercars. I'd love to get my hands on one of those.
