Decided today to pull the inlet manifold from my e60 530d. I had been out in the car this morning, clocked 20 miles and with the trip meter zeroed I averaged 29mpg. I wasn't anticipating any problems as the car has always run well. However 45 mins later and the manifold is sitting on the bench take a look at these pictures!

The vanes as removed.

PMW blank in situ.

That little pneumatic tube is worth checking as it gets brittle with age. I had to trim it back half an inch. It curls round (faces forward) and attaches to the actuator.

Job done ready to fit! Note the actuating rod has been removed as there is nothing for it to drive!
Job done out again plus fill up with fuel £80
The car is definately smoother, definately quicker and a bit suprising it is quieter too! resetting the trip and with a full tank of fuel the consumption improved to 32mpg....Not a scientific test but time will tell.
The operating rod was totally incapable of moving the vanes. vane at extreme right is jammed closed as was the next one, that fractured as soon as I tried to move it. Vanes 3 and 5 did move but were very stiff. Vanes 4 and 6 were broken off and jammed. No. 4 was found down the inlet tract fortunately jammed sideways and no. 6 folded back. That wouldn't have lasted long until it finally let go!
I would whole heartedly recommend this mod.

Excellent job, this will make you sleep a lot better!

Over 2 years down the road here and no ill effects whatsoever...

BTW have you checked your temps / thermostats as well?

Hi No not yet! I'm taking it all to bits again shortly to replace the exhaust manifold as occasionally when the car is cold I can get fumes in the cabin, so I was going to check the engine temp. just before I start that job.
I've also got to replace one of the glowplugs as it's reading 223K? all the others were about 1.8?
BTW for any one who's not seen it there is a youtube video of how to access the 'hidden menu'.
