My Ride: 08 550 Carbon Sport Almost everything factory, but no sound upgrades.
I think, in most cases the problem cause is neither the battery nor the alternator. Maybe the battery if it has run its course.
The problem is related to what BMW calls the driver profile. I solved mine with a Vector trickle charger. It costs about $29, considerably cheaper than the BMW brand charger. Black & Decker sells this charger under their brand and it is available at Home Depot or any Black & Decker store.
There are many details and plenty of discussion in a thread, ?Trickle Charger? posted approximately last December. Search for it, I don?t know how to reference an earlier thread.
My problem is now worse since my E60 is not my primary ride and it sits in the garage until Mrs. sixcard decides she needs to have her nails done! I leave it connected nearly full time.

Do you guys hook the battery tender directly to the battery or to the positive jump start in the engine bay?

I've heard from a few people of potential issues with the "bmw" trickle charger (it starts fires) my dealer doesn't even sell it they sell a different brand charger. Take a look at this thread
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.ph...;highlight=omes
This is the guy I bought my DPE's from I've talked to him about this and he said that the investigators concluded that the fire was cuased by the charger, when he approached bmw about it they would not take responsibility.

A car in this price range should not require owners to deal with this type of stuff. Its bad design and BMW should fix it in future models. If we all condition ourselves to accept the bad design, BMW will continue to ignore the problem. No other car in this price range has the same problem and arguably they provide much richer electronic features.
My car is at the dealer right now for battery issues, and at least for now, i'm hearing its going to be covered under warranty.

Why wouldn't it be positively covered under warranty...? Unless you have a '07 with over 50K miles. The warranty is bumper to bumper. I guess they may be argue that it is a "maintenance" item/issue...that would be really tough for them to do on a 72 month battery. I'm not sure how long the factory battery is for the E60...but I imagine is more than 24 months (ish).

There's no wikipedia page for it so I googled it. I think battery tender is a specific brand:
