I've done a lot of reading on this subject in these forums, and there still seems to be no clear concesus on if it really is needed. From reading all the posts on this subject it seems that those who have not registered the battery have not had any problems, but none have had the non-registered battery for more than a few months (at the time of their post in the forums)
Has anyone replaced their battery, NOT registered it and not have any problems for at least 2 years? Anyone more than 2 years?

the factory battery is 900cca. i bought a 750cca, which is a little smaller in size battery from the autopart store. i had no problems at all. its been about a year or more. it came to about 150 bucks too, so thats pretty good. if you want the brand and where i got it from, let me know.

Hmmm...900 to 750...Maybe the car still thinks you have the older battery installed so it's charging it properly??? Of course it depends on if registration is a definite requirement...I'm just guessing I'm probably wrong.
I have the same question as the OP: "Has anyone replaced their battery, NOT registered it and not have any problems for at least 2 years? Anyone more than 2 years?"

well I just got a quote for $614 for a new battery, installed and registered from the Dealer here in Hawaii (only one for us here). I got a quote of $149 for an Interstate replacement from a local parts store. Think I'll go with the interstate and save a few bucks. Thanks for the replies

I got a 1000cca battery to replace the original factory battery. I bought it for about $175 at advanced autoparts. They hooked up a direct power source through the OBD-II to the car so that even though there was no voltage from the lack of battery the computers never lost power. No problems, no registration of a new battery. The only thing that I had to reset was the clock.

Hi !
At this price, you may considering buying a GT1
I'm in France and changing the battery by myself and buying a GT1 to register it was a interesting operation: not going to my BMW dealer and doing it by myself saved me half the price of the GT1.
Considering every jump to my dealer if at least 50 euros for a diagnosis on their own GT1, the remaining half of the price of the GT1 will be saved in 4 diagnosis.

I went with an Interstate MTP-H9 for $215 (I love Hawaii, but love mainland prices, wish we could get them here). The MTP-H8 was $149. Still cheaper than the dealer. Interstate website said I should use a MTP-H8, but it was smaller than the OEM. The local import parts place recommended the MTP-H9. So far so good. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the replys

I got an H9 from Batteries Plus on Monday night, had it registered today using an Autologic unit at my Indy's shop since I went from a 90Ah battery to a 110Ah one. It was about 15 minutes worth of coding.
