Battery died.. Loud alternator noise after start up

So I've been gone for a week and came back to a completely dead battery. I hooked it up to a battery charger for the night, 7 hours . This morning the battery was only 1/3rd full. Usually the battery would be fully charged, guess I need a new battery.. However my question is when I started the car this morning, I believe it was the car's alternator fan that ran louder than usual. It sounded like it was running on full load. is this normal considering the battery completely died?
