I got the Battery Tender, but it will never get the battery indicator to Green. I think you need a full size battery charger for that. I have one coming in today and hope to use it this weekend. My battery is actually new, but always had the black indicator. I have never had any starting or electrical issues, but want it fully charged anyway (I know I should of had it done when I got it new)
The BMW manual says to connect the charger at the points under the hood, but the Bently manual says standard battery chargers do not have "clean" power and that the battery should be disconnected from the car while charging, that's what I will do.

My Battery Tender took a long time to fully charge the battery until I started placing a weight to close the switch on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the fire wall. This switch is normally closed when the hood is closed. However, when the hood is open the switch is normally open and my 535i does not appear to go into sleep mode. The resulting current drain with the hood open appears to increase the time to charge the battery. YMMV.

My philosophy is to minimize deep discharge cycles in the hope that this may prolong battery life. Since my commute is under 5 miles driving alone may not keep the battery fully charged. The original battery in my 2003 530i was still going strong after 7 years when I traded it for my 535i.

Agreed. I did not wish to imply that. We first have to establish that your car goes into sleep mode normally.

Hi,
I just noticed that my battery is not fully charged. The battery indicator is black, not green. I have an old 12V battery charger.
Can I use this charger? Or should I buy the one from BMW?
If I can use it, is there a special procedure to connect it?
Thanks for your advice!
Ben

To tell you the truth. Once your battery indicator is black, it's on his way out. I've gone through 5 different bmw's in my life and let me tell you...you cannot bring them back from the dead. It will even come back to green but it's a LIE! lol......do not believe and you'll notice this too. I have a trickle charger now and i stole it from my sportbike. Any 6volt/12volt trickle will work. It's just a trickle charger.
