i'd like to replace my battery, which i have no choice due to the car not starting at allll ! I turn the ignition then it starts coughing and turns off, now it wont start at all... just got the car last week. Upon reading some forums i see this is a common issue, not sure if something is draining it. BMW official battery is like $ 225 , i was wondering if i can buy one from autozone or etc.... but i do not know the exact dimensions because i dotn have the car now, my brother got stuck in another state, and he called bmw for assistance, wondering how much they'll charge ? so if anyone knwos exaclty what battery i can replace it with. thanks you

I bought one at PEP Boys. They can look it up and tell you what you need. You can check the Amp Rating, size and length of waurranty.

I have just had mine replaced under warranty. Check with your SA, and he should be able to take care of you.

Like you I have a 2005 545

If you're out of warranty I'd stick with a properly sized Exide or Interstate. The OEM Bosch batteries are middling performers at high prices. The correct batteries will have the vent top connections and terminals of the correct size.

You should verify that the battery "died" because it was "it's time" and that you don't have a charging system problem.

Ya... if you still have warranty have the dealer do it... I had mine replaced couple months back under warranty and they also did a fault scan to make sure nothing was draining the battery... Now car starts great with the new batt.

The high price is partly justified because BWM uses AGM batteries. Standard Pb batteries won't last as long and could even influence the electronics that measure the battery currents. There's quite some difference between batteries, you can't always just compare ratings and swap when it comes to modern high-tech cars like the E60.

If you're interested I can post a PDF of a TIS article about these batteries.

My advice: Spend that little extra for the original battery.

If you do decide to buy a non-OEM: There's really plenty of space, you can't go wrong if you buy the same rating. But you will have a chance that you'll get minor problems after 6 months or so...

AGM batteries are only used in the 5 series with regenerative braking - starting March 2007. I doubt his 545 is in that category, so he should not need to spend the extra $'s for one.
