My experience with my 545 and my e39 528 was much the same with all high performance tires. Performance tires are simply very soft rubber and are made for traction not treadwear. Only when I went with pefromance all seasons on my 528 was I able the get 15K-20K miles on a set of tires.

I took my Dunlop RF's off my 545 after about 8K miles and the rears looked very similiar to yours. After about 3K miles on my Bridgestone S03's I have considerble wear. My Dunlop WinterSports wear much better, which makes sense since they are not made to "stick" to asphalt.

wow just 8k and worn already? About to hit 7k i'll put up pics later and tell me if its like urs.

I agree with Rudy that your rear alignment must be out of spec with too much negative camber and/or some tow-in/out. I'd be interested to see what other members settings are if they know. I admit, I have no idea what my settings are but after the 5100+ miles I've accumalated my Bridgestone RFs seem to be wearing fine (See pics) ...and I've had plenty of spiritted starts as well as some nice freeway entries via the cloverleaf on-ramp near my house!

Also...see what SantaAna winds do to a garage floor? Man wind doesn't blow it SUCKS!!!

Yeah, my last car - a Jetta 1.8T with the sport suspension and 17" wheels had this problem. It would run the insides of the rear tires down to the nub. The toe-in was always going out of whack, and there was visible negative camber. This is the kiss of death for the rear tires.

Considering all the bad press even from dedicated BMW fans does anyone know why BMW persists with RF tyres? The ride is crap & the wear seems to be excessive, the real difference Ive noticed moving from M-B is the ride quality which all the car writers said was better on BMW but quite frankly is not the case with RF tyres which incidently M-B do not use.

So you guys think its the spacers? But why would the rear be worn out so much more than the fronts if it was the spacers fault? Remember, both front and rear have spacers, and the fronts are fine. I guess I just think that after 6,000 miles the tires have worn much too much. Perhaps after 20,000 miles to see that kind of wear would have been more normal.

My concern now is not so much the current state of the tires but my idea to get Style 166 rims and new tires. The new rims will be wider so spacers won't be needed .. I just dont want to kill another set of tires so quickly. The spacers can be removed. Although if it is my driving I'm certaintly not going to change to save my tires. I consider driving fud and try to enjoy it as much as I can unlike most "normal" people (read: people who own non-luxury/sports cars) who consider driving work and no fun in their cars. No offense to them.
no joke Mark it RWD

I'd be willing to bet this wear pattern has nothing to do with the fact they are RFTs. I've had the identical issue on another car with normal high performance tires. Zero suspension modifications and regular alignments.

I agree -- same wear pattern on my previous E39's and same pattern as my first set of Dunlops on the E60...

My dealer also thinks that its just normal wear. The alignment on the car and everything is perfect as checked. When I get the new 166 rims I'm dreaming about i'll dump the spacers. The fronts surely won't need them with the aggressive offset of the rim already, however, the rear might need 10mm to balance out the front but that will have to be seen first. The spacers might have contributed to the problem but I doubt by much -- dealer doesn't think they were an issue either.

I'll probably just keep driving on these tires until the spring as they are. If things get too bad I can always switch to my winter rims or if winter ever decides to come this year I'll have to... hope not!

You guys think that running higher tire pressure might have contributed to the wear? I always ran the max load pressure at 36 psi front and 42 psi rear checked every couple months eventhough I almost always drive alone or with one other person. I'm thinking when I get the new rims i'll run the regular load pressures of 32 psi front and 35 psi rear. But again this fails to explain why the fronts are fine. I always felt the higher pressures made the car drive better along with protect the rims from potholes. But assuming this caused my problem, whats better? dented rims or worn out tires? Screwed in both cases! LOL.

Lomag what tire pressure are you runnin in the rear? From the looks of the photos it looks like the outter edges arent worn at all... so it looks like the tire pressure was too high and you've been running online on the middle part of the tire.

Eh while you're at it whats your front pressure too?

EBMCS03, look at the post right above yours. Lomag already tells us what pressures he's running...

Sorry, but they look like standard independent rear suspension wear to me. My E39 burned through a set of Dunlop SP 2000 (OEM) rear tires to the point that one blew out on a very hot, fast drive at about 20K miles. The dealer examinied the situation and recommended an alignment. The next set of tires (Michelin Pilots) were traded with the car at 100K-plus, no trace of problems.

But honestly, yours don't look that worn on the inside (mine were dramatically so, especially right side). And then, there is the torque; you must pay to play.

The big debate I'd be having is whether to replace all 4 with standard tires.

Cheers,
Ray Hull
