Yup, I hear it very "loud and clear" Actually, it makes the noise only in the cooler temps say below 55 degrees. In the hotter months, not at all.

Mine came out of nowhere this past week. It started as a roar when I left work, was much louder when I got home three miles later. While trying to diagnose, a metal on metal thump began. It vibrated the AC lines, and I noticed the pulley on the compressor was wobbling (never had that before). I'm pretty sure it's the bearing on the shaft because the sound is there with or without AC on--even unplugged. I'll have the mechanic stop by Monday, but thinking it is isolated to the compressor itself. I thought it may be the VANOS at first. Nope!

I've found a couple compressors for $400-500, but list price is almost $1200.

Correct, all E60 have a "wobble-plate" style compressor with no clutch.

No clutch in most E60 compressors. I believe the later ones DO have a clutch though

Opposite. 2004 def. has clutchless. I think the latest E60's went back to a clutch...
