My Ride: 2008 BMW 550i M Sport
Default Back in E60 after 6 years :)

Hello everyone!
so after few years and selling my 545i I have been in few other cars. I still own others including F90 M5 but I was looking a new daily. After some searching I got my eye on 2008 550i with M sport and other bits. Black on black with automatic trans. One owner southern car with 54K on the odometer and solid maintenance history. As it is 15 years old vehicle there are few small things that need addressing but those are really minor. Since I was without one for a good amount of time I have question regarding idle. I know those cars do not have idle control valve but idle is controlled through valvetronic. Car idles evenly with a/c on at 700ish rpm. The moment a/c is off idle drops to 500 sometimes slightly less and there’s slight but noticeable vibration. Does anyone here amhave any experience with such an issue ? I didn’t read any codes yet or anything else. No lights on dash or anything like that. If anyone that still has one or used to have one like that could chime in I’d appreciate it other than that car is like new and I am super happy to be back in E60 I will try to attach some photos once I’ll have it the way I like it but for now here she is

What are you using to read the BMW specific DTC codes?

I am lucky since my wife is working at the dealership so when I need I just go there for a courtesy check 😉

Just brought it up on Monday night so honestly no time just yet. I know transmission hasn’t been serviced in this car so it has that slight delay while engaging reverse. I’ve ordered new fluid with mechatronic seals and will start from there. Oil was changed every year and with 54k on the odo I am not to worried. Car doesn’t smoke so valve seals are good. If there’s anything I am unable to diagnose myself I’ll take it in. Why question about the hardware used for diagnosing?

Check for vacuum leaks (smoke test or soapy spray).

I asked what you used to read DTC codes because not everyone uses the proper device.

So it took a while to have my car tested because of my work/life schedule, anyway car is back with me. After transmission fluid square seal replacement mechatronic sleeve’s replaced, new oil pan with filter and new fluid obviously, there are no codes from what I’ve been told. I had check engine light showing up randomly. This turned out to be fuel tank vent valve if I remember well. Car shifts smoothly however I still have that slight delay when engaging reverse. I am tempted to drop mechatronics again and replace solenoids and that plate that’s between two halves to see if it’ll improve that condition. Anyway car seems sound and solid here she is

Did you do the adaptation reset, and the "training drive" procedure? If not, I'd suggest not doing anything until the tranny has a chance to settle into its new fluid / seals. It'll take it a while to adapt properly if those steps weren't done.

Oh, and I'd be tempted to put some spacers behind those rear wheels to get 'em out near the fender lip (but I'm overly anal about that kind of thing). ;-)

Ha ha i have spacers but I am not sure if I still have extended bolts. 15mil should fit perfectly fine. Adaptation procedure have been done. It shifts perfectly. It only has that slight delay when put in reverse, although it’s not as before so definitely an improvement.

I love this. I found myself in a similar situation. I originally bought a 2008 528i 6 speed in 2012 and sold it in 2020. Since then I've had a 15 MINI Cooper S 6 Speed, a 13 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed, 13 Toyota Prius, a 2015 Audi A4 6 Speed, a 2019 Atlas, and a 2020 Jetta. I just found myself a 2004 525i with 89k miles at Auction and working through the issues myself.

Already fixed a bunch of issues (Bad MAF, Oil level sensor, spark plugs, power steering reservoir, Alarm battery, Intake Boot)

I confirmed the Cat's are good (The downstream sensors go to 0 when accelerating), which also means that all the O2 sensors work, so I bought a used MAF on eBay that works years better than the one that was on my car.

Between all that, it fixed the hard misfire, MAF issues, and the vaccum leak, so the 28A2 Mixed Air path code is gone.

I'm still left with the 2882 Code for Mixture Bank 1, but i'm not getting it on Bank 2...

I wonder if what I'm experiencing is the Vanos "rattle"?

The car is lean on Bank 1, and a little on Bank 2, when accelerating, not just at idle.

My old 2008 528i 6-speed on Bilstein PSS coilovers

My 2004 the day I grabbed her from the auction.
