Default Awd 6 spd transmission

I had my mechanic check my transmission and he says 4th gear is going out, must drive easy to avoid the transmission light coming on. When it does i have to clear it while driving. Can it be rebuilt, or must the transmission be replaced as a whole?

You need to get the code. It may not need a transmission. It may just need a service with solenoids and gaskets. That is the issue most of the time. Dealership said I needed a new trans because i was getting errors every time I pushed it hard. 10 years later driving it with not one issue and it cost me around $900 to completely fix is with new fluid and pan of course. You need the code

How do i get the code if it doesn’t throw one? It just says transmission malfunction drive moderately. I gave mhd, xdelete, and bimmer code. I didn’t get it checked at the dealer i went to my mechanic that did all my mods he wouldn’t tell me I need a transmission if I didn’t need 1, I should’ve asked if it could be repaired instead. I actually changed the fluid and filter about 3-4k miles ago. Its slipping.

It's definitely throwing a code if you are getting that message. If it's slipping then it was driven on it too long with no service. The service that should have been done was the sealing sleeves, gaskets and solenoids with new fluid. It's a very known issue but a lot of people wait until it's too late and damage the transmission. I would still get the code just to double check before having to put a trans in or rebuild it to see if money can be saved
