I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in previous posts, but to me it sounds like your high pressure fuel pump is on it's way out. There is a known defect with the n54 engine's HPFP. check engine lights, reduced power, rough idles and steering wheel shudders are all symptoms of a faulty HPFP. My 535i had the same problem and ended up qualifying for the lemon law. i would take it back to a different dealership and explain the symptoms. Have them check the high pressure fuel pump.

Strange, I always try and use Shell 91. I took my 06' 530i in for the seat mat passenger airbag recall the other day (how they missed that during the CPO process I'll never know, but I digress...) and the fuel light came on before I dropped it off. With the Shell I had been getting rough idle cold starts to the point where I was starting to wonder what to change to correct it. I filled up with Mobil 91 and now I have no rough idle. Call me crazy but BMW may just be right... No more Shell for me.

what you need to do is take the vehicle in to the dealership and get the fuel pump replaced. there was a factory recall on the high pressure fuel pumps. it's not the gas that's the problem, it is a known defect in the N54 engine.

As for qualifying for the lemon law, you need to speak to an attorney

I used to use "whatever was cheapest" in my '95 525iT but I would get pinging with anything below 89 octane. I pulled off the head (broken head bolt) and since then it hasn't run well on anything but the "top tier" gasolines. I recently got a 2007 525xi and am using Shell premium almost exclusively without any problems. Here's a link to some info on "top tier" gas: http://autorepair.about.com/od/generalinfo/a/110305.htm . I used to drag race and I know that all gas is not created equal. Some engines (like the bimmers') seem to be a bit more sensitive to the additives they put in the gas.

If you were able to push start it, it started. Sounds like it could be a battery problem.

That's weird. The L/100 km meter beneath the tachometer has been acting strange in my car (06 525i). It would bounce around as the car is coming to a stop and I swear my gas mileage has gone down. Previously I'd be getting 600 km per fillup and now i'm getting 500 km. Anyways, I brought it to the dealer and they told me the mileage is prob due to the weather getting colder and the car needing more gas to run and couldn't find anything else wrong with it although they did acknowledge that the l/100km gauge was acting strange. Anyways, the master tech there asked me what gas I had been using and I told him the brand (it's premium but a no name brand) and he specifically told me to use Shell premium because their gas has no ethanol in it. So will try for a couple of tanks to see if the problem is still there and then may have to return for further checks. But strange he told me Shell and the original poster's dealer specifically told him not to go to Shell.
