Stupid question but what is the HPFP?
If you don't have a 535i don't worry....If you do Where have you been? Hpfp=High Pressure Fuel Pump
A Prop shaft driven pump on the motor on the N54 motor that boost the fuel pressure to about 2-3kpsi from normal fuel pump pressure. They are some what prone to failure on the N54 motor and all the fixes to the HPFP have not fixed the problem over the 2-3 years the motor has been out in the USA.
Also at the e90post forums for those that say 93 octane does not make a big difference , I would say you are very misinformed... at least in regards with a turbo motor
It was either Burger or Visnu that did some dyno runs on a N54 motored car and the differences in power were quite significant vs 89 and 91... like 20+ hp and Lbs/ft . On the NA motors it did help but it was only in the 5-10 hp area, so with in motor difference tolerances.
Also with regards to what I posted earlier with the Top Tier gas, I know it is just marketing but it is advised to follow it,if you have a 535i , BMW has denied HPFP replacement on cars that did not use gas from the "approved" list. If you talk with BMW NA it is the first question they will ask you if there are any HPFP or fuel delivery issues with the N54.
Not saying __ is better than _____ or _____ or _____ , just that it is spelled out very clearly in your owners manual on the 535i, 335i , 135i, and X6 x35 here in North America that you have to use Premium Unleaded and it has to be from a Top Tier provider.
Hell in my VW R32 it ran like crap on Shell 93 (very rough idle and lower fuel mileage) , but did very well on BP and Quicktrip gas from the Atl area. Over here exact opposite...

Thanks. I don't have a 535 so I wasn't familiar with the acronym but I keep seeing it mentioned on this forum.

I use only Chevron. My car does idle a little rough for the first 15 secs or so after it's been sitting for a couple of days....but smooths out quickly, and never have had a check engine light. My SA said it was normal, and they found nothing wrong. In fact one time I was sitting at the dealer in the waiting room, and the staff was moving some of their show room cars around...and they cranked up a brand new 550 that was in there....it sounded just like mine.....idled rough for about 15 secs. They cranked up a M5, and it did the same thing.

In LA gas (all grades) flow like wine, so no problems here. Why stay away from Shell, I thought they were one of the best gasolines? I read something posted in the m3forums that rated different gasolines. Chevron, Shell, and 76 were good, Arco was bad, that's all I can remember.
