average MPH/MPG

how did you get 123mph average? even one stop will lower your average mph drastically. seems to me like you'd need to be going a lot faster than 123mph consistently to maintain the 123mph average, and that doesn't seem very safe. most people won't hit 123mph for 1 second in their lives, much less average it over 18 gallons of gas. even if that is 10mpg, it's still what 180 miles going 123mph straight? really? i just don't believe you, but...you live in germany, may have been doing that average on the autobahn, i'm not sure, still seems pretty excessive though. i certainly wouldn't want to drive anywhere near you

I'm averaging around 14.7 mpg in city driving on my 2007 530i, and guessing that the MPH is the same as yours.
Incidentally, what were the symptoms that led you to replace the VANOS solenoid and camshaft sensor?

it is very interesting that you are getting similar mileage in your 530i. i will let you know what this next tank of gas does as far as mpg goes, since it is the first tank after the VANOS swap. i'd like to tell you what idrive says now, but i've got a lot of gas left so it might be skewed!

cool, thanks guys. keep posting when some of you get the MPH average in on the next tank, M5 included! i also think it's cool if you post and get considerable better mileage on the next tank from what you've posted so far. may have been a fluke with the last tank.
just remember it isn't a contest, it's so people have a reference when they ask the MPG question. for the fun of it, might be cool to see the city you live in, too. you know, to see how chicago traffic compares to socal i'm going to consolidate what we have so far:
530i, 23.2 MPH, 15.3 MPG (member tuffluck, Dallas)
535i, 25.8 MPH, 20.8 MPG (member sheldor535i, SoCal)
545i, 28.7 MPH, 16.1 MPG (member healthservices, SoCal)
545i, 33.1 MPH, 21.3 MPG (member DD_545i, Germany)
545i, 49.0 MPH, 26.0 MPG (member jaycal3, Connecticut)

'08 550i Average speed and milage over about 3 months (I don't reset the trip computer):
35.6 mph
18.3 mpg
I commute 21.1 miles--about 17 miles of freeway.
Interesting note, though. When I do the math and use the number of miles between fill-ups and number of gallons, my mileage is actually better than the computer (0.8-1.3 mpg better). Another thread talked about the computer over estimating the milage--not my experience.
