I get about 17-19mpg aound town and on the highway I have gotten 28-30mpg. I was getting worse gas mileage from my previous car and it was a six cylinder.
Gas in NY is about $2.30 a gallon.

A complete accounting of all miles driven and gallons input for the first 5922 miles has averaged 21.72 mpg while the OBC averaged 22.55 or 3.8% overstated -- in my case.
I will continue the records.

17.5 mpg for me (per the computer). Mix of city and highway. Must be the heavy foot.

28.5 = max.! cruising on highway w/o speeding...

In my 525i, six-speed manual, I've averaged 25.9 miles/gallon over the first 3465 miles including the first 2240 miles in Europe. Note that this is U.S. gallons, not Imperial gallons.
For those who may have noticed the wildly optimistic nature of their cars computer, your car may be configured to report miles/gallon (UK or Imperial) which will be about 20% higher than miles/gallon (US). I know that my US spec. car came so configured and with that correction, my car computer is only about 4% optimistic when compared to hand calculation.

I've owned my E60 for nine months as of today and have kept a record of every fillup in a neat application on my Palm OS Treo. The average mileage for all fillups is 17.649 miles per US gallon of premium gasoline for mixed freeway/city driving. I haven't taken the car on a highway trip yet.
The onboard computer in iDrive tells me I'm getting 20.7 mpUSg.

I get under 20 mpg, like 15-17, when I'm just running around in the city, stop and go with fairly spirited driving.
On the highway, I get as high as 31 mpg going around 60, but at 77-78 for 200 miles today, I got 28.3 mpg. (I think that's 8.3 liters/100k. I was playing with switching the units over to metric.) Pretty good for a 325-hp V8. It seems to have gotten a little better as the car has aged, now at 2,300 miles.
My mileage would suffer in Germany, where I find myself trouncing on the gas and braking more! But at moderate speeds, in states with waaaay too many highway police, it gets great mileage.
