Am currently visiting California where the "gas" is $2:50 / gal. You should hear the locals squeal about this until I put them straight as follows. If you work on the assumption that in central London a litre of any type of fuel costs ~90p and the exchange rate is ?1 = $1.8 then we are paying $7.35 / gal.

People here wonder why I bought a diesel until I run through the maths!

I have done circa 5,500miles in a 525d now and rarely do I get anything other than 37.x mpg. On a long motorway run I may get like 39, and constant town driving 35.

But mostly I am doing mixed driving on a tank of fuel and get 37.x mpg.

I have a 530D and seem to average low 30's for combined driving.

Don't forget all of you that a US gallon is different from an imperial gallon. Don't ask me what the difference is, but there is one.

My 530d (~8,500 miles) figures are similar, low 30s for combined, and 40 - 41 on a long motorway trip.

My '57 Beetle wouldn't even do that.

Note the use of Imperial gallon vs. US gallon. 1 Ig=1.2 USg

I would return my car to the dealer if I didn't get 35 mpg like some of you do. I'm lucky to get 21 mpg. At this rate, I should get 26 mpIg, still short of your figures. Alternately, your 35 mpIg translates to 29 mpUSg. This figure corresponds to substantially highway driving using a gasoline engine, in my estimate.

We covered approx 4,100 miles over the last few weeks driving from home through Scotland, England, France, Spain and back. Average consumption was 42.8 MPG.
