This must have been an Aux retrofit and its been installed in a non standard location. It should have been in the glove box just under the torch light.

Funny, I was curious about this too. The 07 550i's I've seen all have the aux in the back of the armrest facing the back seat 
which is not a very useful location for the driver.

That was ths standard location for the factory fitted aux before the LCI which moved it into the armrest compartment.
It was only moved in to the arm rest cubby hole of the car came with 6FL usb/audio interface(don't think that became standard but may be wrong). Otherwise its still in the same old place in the back between the front seats.
