AUX input slow to pick up iPod sometimes?

My Ride: 2007 Mercedes Benz e63 AMG
Sometimes, when I plug in the iPod into the AUX input, it takes a minute or two for the car to identify the port is in use and allow the sound to come, even though the iPod is playing.
But other times, the car identifies it and the music begins right away after plugging in.
Suggestions? Software issue? I don't think its the cable, but I could be wrong.
