I have been using the adaptive Xenons in my car on "auto" mode, which I am slowly getting used to (read: getting lazy). I have however noticed that the lights sometimes fail to switch back off when I expect them to. Yesterday, they flicked on upon entering the tunnel near my home, but failed to switch back off, depite the fact that I was in bright sunshine - bright enough for me to pop my shades back on. Time was about 6:30pm or so. I have noticed similar behaviour earlier in the week to, and am wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

MANY MANY TIMES HAPPEN TO ME THAT AUTO LIGHTS FLICKED ON IN DARK AREAS, BUT SOMETHIMES (NOT ALWAYS) THEY DID NOT SWITH BACK OFF EVEN IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE ! MAY BE SENSORS TEMPORARY FAILURE.

I've had the same observation, and believe I read an explanation that it's not just the amount of brightness or light available which is hitting the sensors, but the angle of the light. Presumably, a low angle indicates that the source of the sunlight is nearing sunset (or conversely just after sunrise), and leaves the lights on.

The following post explains in a bit more detail what ExGMan is talking about:

It sounds like the car is working as designed...

I had this problem until I left the car in sun about 5 hours. After that I never got the problem again!

Sounds like some humidity in the sensor could cause it.

Here is a TSB on the subject.

Thanks a million for the clarifications and links, folks.

Rudy: your description/explanation in the other thread you linked to has to be the most informative and succinct explanation I have received. It does also confirm my experiences with this phenomenon, i.e. it seems to happen in the evenings when the blazing sun is but a few degrees above the horizon.
