Thanks for all the replies! I wonder if this is a US/non-US difference like many others with these cars (like auto folding mirrors, etc). The doors on my 06 530xi do not unlock when I turn the car off.

Typically if you are putting the car in park then 99% of the time you are turning the car off and then exiting the vehicle....unless you are sitting in the car waiting to pick up someone or are messing around. At a stop light typically (at least we don't) one doesn't put the car in park, so it will still be locked for that occasion. As I see it, and obviously the safety guys don't, the majority of the time the car is put into park is when the driver will be opening the doors. Oh well, she'll just have to get used to pulling the door handle twice or using the unlock button on the dash every time she gets out of the car! I guess it's the extra step annoyance, but she'll survive. It's definitely a night and day upgrade from her previous car (03 mustang)

Now my wife has to pull the drivers door handle twice in order to exit the car, and it's driving her nuts!

So now when she stops, no robber/rapist can get to her before she looks around
and then opens the door, with a two incomprehensibly complex movements.

What's the problem here?

Maybe she should stick to the truck.

Here's what I always do: When I pull the key FOB out of the steering wheel, I press the un-lock button which only unlocks the driver's door. That way I don't have to pull on it twice and potentially break the handle. Plus, when locking the door (after I get out) it doesn't have to reset all of the other door locks being the case if I used the "unlock all doors" button on the console.

My old '99 540i/6 went through many door lock actuators and many more window regulators and had to be fixed over and over again...that E39 series had some bad flaws of engineering.
