When I drive my steptronic in Manual mode, I can only downshift. My manual gear upshift has stopped working.

Anyone seen this before?

Anyone?

Another issue: when I really quickly accelerate in D or DS mode, I get a 'Cruise control malfunction error' and I cant engage cruise control again. When I switch off the car and restart, the message is gone and I can use cruise control again.

If I accelerate slowly, there are no issues and I can engage Cruise control.

Seems something in the rapid acceleration and transmission shifting is throwing up this error.

Any one else has experienced such a problem.

BTW - all these issues came up after I got the mechatronics sleeve replaced in my transmission.

I have a step but have never experienced any of those issues. Get thee to a mechanic.

Dude, that does not sound normal. Sorry, but I think you need to take it back to whoever did your transmission work.

+1 I suspect that while working in the transmission area some wiring or connectors were disrupted.

So I took it back to the shop for them to review whether it is an issue related to the Transmission mechatronics sleeve replacement, etc. and they are telling me that the Shifter works electronically and that there is no physical connection between the Shifter and transmission and its the CAN BUS that takes the signal. So I should now show it to BMW to try to fix it.

Seems strange that the issue came up right after they touched the transmission .. I am not buying this story but they caant also fix electronic issues so I guess I have to take it into BMW!

Does anyone know how the shifter works in auto transmission vehicles and could this be an issue independent of the transmission work?

Any help is appreciated.

Well, the shop is sorta correct... the transmission selector switch for up/down shift is not physically connected to the transmission (no mechanical linkage), but it is wired to the transmission control unit through 2 wires (one for upshift, one for downshift) through an intermediate connector. You can check out an online wiring diagram to show this (http://spaghetticoder.org/bmw/wds/e60e61/ -- although you will need to install Adobe SVG software to view the diagrams). Unfortunately, the online version isn't complete - it doesn't have the links to the pictures of the connectors and their locations in the vehicle which is in the complete version.

If I were a betting person, I'd suggest they check the connection to pin #5 on the transmission control unit (attached to the transmission) which is supposed to receive the upshift signal from the steptronic switch. Assuming they weren't mucking about elsewhere on the vehicle, this would be the most likely wire to be disconnected/damaged if they were working around the transmission itself. Assuming the signal is broken/disconnected, this could lead to other errors from the computer (possibly your other issues with cruise, etc. as the computer might not be able to send upshifts to the transmission)

Good luck!

PS - If the shop doesn't have access to a complete WDS and you need to know the location of the immediate connector, let me know and I can check from home (where I have a complete version)

Thanks a lot for this info.

I had my car at the dealer to fix this and it was a wire that was short in the shifter assembly. They had had to put a new one in.
Thankfully, my extended warranty covered it.
