Auto - no shifter lights

Guys
I have a 530D, 2003, and when you move the auto stick, it does not light the P, N, R, D beside the stick.
The panel does light when the lights are on, but no indication of stick position.
Any ideas?
I have checked that the wires are connected to the wee PCB under the trim.... I guess next step would be to swap the pcb for a known good one.
