When you press AUTO, what does it do? You can set it on HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW in the idrive.

I believe it simply controls the air vent speed automatically for you. If it has a long way to go to your desired temp, it sets the fan speed high, then gradually tapers the speed off as the car interior gets to your desired temp setting.

It also cycles the Air Conditioning as needed, but I switch by AIR off, since I am interested in fuel economy and don't really need air cond. in Nov in Chicago!

Last week of driving, I've averaged 27.6 mpg!!

If you run it manually, you'll get air with the temp you have the dial on. If you'Re in AUTO mode your A/C controls everything and your interior will have the temp you selected with the dial, means the A/C gives you colder air when it's warmer and warmer air when the interior is colder. The settings in the idrive seem to be for "how" the auto mode works.
Means, the A/C cools down or heats up the interior faster or slower, I think... You can set it because ppl are different and some like it slower, some faster with bigger temp differences...

There is a HI-MED-LO setting in I-drive. It doesn't change the auto seetings program, just the velocity of the fan. So if you don't like a breeze you set it to low. Most women don't like to feel the air circulation. Most men like to feel the air. I have mine set on medium. Iceman??? HI???

Hey Iceman, you must have one of the only 545s in Europe. I never saw one. I figured the ?75/tank of gas was the reason.

Oh well, we have to look hard to find the roads to drive the beast on. You don't.

On second thoughts if we hadn't left Munich at 7am on a Saturday morning, maybe the Bahn is like the LA freeways.
