Can somebody explain how this feature works? What makes it "auto dimming"?

All 3 mirrors (1 inside & 2 outside) auto dim. The inside rear view mirror has light sensors on the front & back, and when the light intensity on the mirrored side is greater than the back side, it assumes it's because somebody's head lights behind you are going to blind you, and using electricity it causes the mirrors to get darker.

Just to add, and I'm no expert on this subject, I think the electricity that stream refers to is passed through some sort of LCD grid that causes the mirror to "dim" or lose some of it's reflectivity...

i used to hate them since u cant see if there is a cop behind u at night...but now i dont mind at all since there are so many boneheads here in nyc/nj that drive with their highbeams blaring at night.

Another thing i want to add: i dunno if it has anything to do with autodimming mirrors.
So it's like this: i was sitting in my car with the engine turned off but parking lights on since it was night. Key in position 1 since i was listening to my radio. A car came from behind and wanted to enter a road that i partially have blocked it with my car so he flashed me. In that instant my lights (interior lights) came on. So that was a surprise. Either a friend of mine opened a door in that particular momment or it has smth to do with a function that i wasn't aware of.

Must be a glitch, or you accidentally moved your key to off position.

Stoley, FYI, the "electric eye" adjusting mirror feature has been around for a long time. I remember my Father's 59 DeSoto had this feature, except that the prism effect (same as manual mirror tilts) was activated an "eye" that operated an electro magnet. Only trouble was when Dad lit his cigar with puffs on a match, watching himself in the mirror, the damned mirror would flip-flop/click-clack incessantly until he was done with his lighting. Minor technology glitch from 40+ years ago.

Cheers,
Ray Hull

This "auto dim" mirror also works for the highbeam assistant (same sensor)
