Sophisticated? Modern? Nah - I agree with the magazine (can't remember which one) that said the E60 interior is like a 1980s bachelor pad. As for that nasty wood trim, they put so many coats of high-gloss laquer on it that there could be anything lurking underneath. Yuk. But I'd still choose the BMW.

Below is a link to US based car review that rates the top ten factory car stereos in different price ranges. I know stereo sound quality is personal preference but having had the hi-fi version (std in US) in my 04 530i and listening to the L7 during the test drive of the 06 550i, IMHO there is no comparison between the two systems.

Good luck in your decision and be thankful that either way it is still an E60

My shortlist for cars was very short indeed: BMW 5-series and Audi A6. The dealers gave the cars for full afternoon 4-hour test drives to get enough of experience with them. There is no way around the fact that Audi interior has better fit and finish, and much more expensive looking materials. And the A6 switches feel like precision instruments, whereas some of the E60 switches and controls feel plasticky.
However, the Audi design comes directly from the 1980's. The dashboard and the steering wheel look like Mazda 626 from early 80's, just done with nicer materials.
And on the road E60 wins hands down, both in dynamics and comfort (especially interior sound comfort).
