Anyone had a fuel pump fail

My Ride: 535d Sport in Carbon Black / high gloss shadow line and beige leather / dark poplar with professional nav, bluetooth phone prep, CD changer, bi-xenon adaptive headlamps, servotronic steering, folding mirrors, heated comfort seats, TV, extended voice control and Logic 7 hifi.
My car is currently being recovered to the dealer - BMW mobile tech suspects fuel pump failure - although display says gearbox.... all very odd as I just went to start it and the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and car would not start.
Tech says fuel pump failure not "unheard" of, but I can't help but wonder if this is just an electrical gremlin in the computer...
