When I'm stopped I can hear a slight rattling from the engine area - it is not too pronounced but I was wondering - also hear these other sounds as well (4,000 miles):
doors squeak a bit
weird kind of hydraulic noise after stopping or even when my car is parked in the garage - whenever I come near it or open a door

no rattling sound but i experienced the squeaky doors which were actually the windows. my dealer put some anti friction tape for me which got rid of the squeaks.
the hydraulics sound, i think, is the car's computer doing its "work". nothing to worry abt

don't use that gummi stuff on your doors it contains silicone which is the root of all evil apparently if this is same issue a lot of people on here have experienced with their doors.
instead search on this site for the word "carbaflo" and you will find the thread that contains the BMW NA service bulletin relating to the fix for the door squeaks.
I had this treatment (carbaflo) done in uk today and it cured the problem. another issue fixed for me by the posts on forums.e60.net

Gummipflege Product
I believe the ad because it is not likely that BMW would use a product to cure a problem that creates the problem.
With that said, I did use spray silicone successfully on the 540, but only used it twice like maybe in years 5 through 8. I think I was just lucky because all I had was a little creaking in the doors when the frame would twist at ultra low speeds li,e 10-15 mph.

joe540: Glad to see another Chicagoan on this site. Welcome.
The hydraulic-like noise you are hearing is actually the cars computers shutting down and beginning the process of going into sleep mode. All normal.
The noises from the door are not and BMW has issued a TSB to correct the situation. I however just purchased the products from my dealer to do it myself. The silicone remover is pretty cheap but the Carboflo is expensive! However, since you are so close, you are welcome to using the remover and Carboflo I have, if you would like instead of going to the dlear. Let me know.
The noise that you are hearing from the engine area is the hydraulic lifters from the VANOS. I asked my tech the same thing since I thought I sounded louder than my E46. He said the noise is completely normal . I had him listen to it once with the engine on a cold start(left it there over night) and once after the engine had been ran well.

Thanks guys - do have SMG and I thought it was probably normal - just a little weird - I mean, all I need to do is tocuh my car and it sounds like it "wakes up" - almost eerie like it is actually "alive".... don't tell my wife, but if my 545's skin was a little softer I might prefer it...
