Anyone ever used steering wheel buttons for gearshift?

As I'd suspected. Outrageously expensive mod. Not sure why, but some mods I'll set a limit for a couple of hundred bucks on, but others (like awesome rims) I have no problem spending a lot on. All depends on how much value I'm getting from it. When I was looking to buy my previous car (Audi) having steering wheel tiptronic change was almost at the top of the list of requirements. Having test driven a bunch of E60s though, it became clear that I could actually live without steering wheel shifting on a Beemer. Of course if a fairly cheap way of achieving that (like this thread discusses) came along, I'd be up for that for a couple of hundred bucks.

Nothing compares to have dedicated paddle for gear shifts. The buttons on the steering wheel is a nice idea but there are too many things to consider when you are implementing that. You dont want gears changing when all you were trying to do was to scroll a telephone list....

I did a small prototype of this idea on a collegues car and my idea works. The implementation was a bit clunky but it works - i could change the gears with the steering wheel buttons.
