Anyone best this V8 MPG?
I just did a careful check on MPG on my 05 545i. Filled the tank to the very top when starting and at the end of the run. 177.4 miles between Annapolis, MD and Exit 10 on the NJ Tpk took 5.815 gallons, doing about 65mph, but with gentle acceleration. That computes to 30.5 mpg!
It's interesting in that although acceleration is a blast in these cars, they are capable of terrific mpg. It's still a very satisfying drive. No point in buying a rice burner or hybrid at these mpgs.

Being serious for a moment, I never loafed on the highway with my 740i and could easily get 25+ mph on the highway based on both fill-up and math or the OBC. My overall fuel economy from January'07 thru Mid-December '07 [when I traded it for my '07 530xi] was 21.3 mpg in 40%/60% city/highway mix of driving.
So, do I believe your estimate ? ? ... I think it's entirely possible to light-foot your way to 30mpg on the highway with a V-8 BMW in good operating condition.

WOW 30?? thats hard to beat...
I thought 25mpg was good... going to vegas at 75-80 mph fully loaded with luggage and 4 people... thought that was good...

i havent even seen 30 on my 530i. highest i ever had was 26.
I believe it, 30MPG on the highway cruising at 65MPH is entirely possible. I am averaging 23MPG with 40/60 City/Highway driving.
As you said, if you are light on the foot and I use the the cruise as often as I can then you will get excellent MPG. Driving to work I usually cruise at 75MPH and average about 28MPG.

My Ride: E46 330, E60 550 on order: Carbon Black/Natural Brown, 6MT.
I've obtained similar results on slower roads. I can get about 30 mpg traveling between 55-65 mph. At the 70-80 mph freeway speeds around here, the number is closer to 26 mpg.

OK - I know I am going to get some hate mail for this one - but is there anyone out there with software upgrades that will improve gas mileage as opposed to performance based upgrades? I mean - gas is continuing to rise... $4 a gallon - who knows where it will end.
I am putting between 150 and 400 miles a day on my 535xi and while I am getting 26-30 mpg on the highway - I'd like to get more.
If there is no one currently with the upgrades - I think theres a market for it (or will be a market) - maybe someone who works for a company that has the capability to develop such software might be listening??????
