I always thought that BMW would come out with something faster, but I also thought it would come in the form of a M5.

New M3 over the 550 for me.

Maybe I would like bmw to keep the 545 the same for a while longer... but I'm not too worried... like everyone said theres always something better out there... and theres going to probably be a price increase... the 545 is expensive enough as it is now! (*well to me*)

Power wise... prob not notice the difference too much. I dont go flooring it at every light to see if i can make it to 60 in 5.8sec... if this is you then the 550 still isnt right for you... you need to get a M5. OOoooo ///M5.... I want M5...

When the new V8 comes to the US i just might get the Dinan CAI and free flow exhaust (still under development) to compensate!

I first mentioned the new engines months and months ago after my salesman showed me a memo from BMW. Many folks confuse the 4.8 V8 the X5 has -- that's an M engine I believe and NOT the engine the 5/6/7 will get. This new V8, is a just that, a new V8. It's going to be 4.6L with 355 hp and a bit more torque, no one knows the torque spec. I'm not sure where folks are getting their HP specs from, but they're wrong. It won't be 400 HP or anything crazy like that, although it'd be nice. Just like the bump the E39 V8 got from 282 -> 290 HP. The difference won't be too big but it will be an all new engine. As for the model change from 545 to 550, the memo stated that but I'm not sure BMW will follow through with it, we'll see. It's really not significant IMO.

I was too wondering why BMW would replace the great V8 it has now. Afterall it's only 4 years old, if that. The i6 engines are much older along with other engines BMW has... but, I guess it's the competition forcing it.

Aye ya ya!!

I can't believe how much crap there is on this post. I guess that is the downside of the internet age, where info is shared and false rumors spread like wildfire just as fast.

I am w/ Lomag. Based on everything I heard from within BMW. I do disagree w/ the 4.8 Litre in the X5 being an M engine, it is not.

BMW is on a 6~7 years production cycle. Be it body or engine. So let's look at our fingers and count to 7, thatz when you know a body style or engine is due for an update. Sooooo.... since the 4.5 Valvetronic engine was first introduced in 2002 it will be 2008 (yes I know that is only 6 but you need to look at introduction time). The new R6 is right on time as the 530 3.0 Liter engine was first introduced in 2000

Traditionally BMW typically would give the engine a lil' power boost by ways of software and slightly refined exhaust at the last year or 2 of the engine cycle. So what I am saying is that rest assured that you won't see a new V8 for another 2~3 years. Nor will you see the current engine power twick for anothe year or 2. And all this talk about the 550 cranking out around 400 HP is just laughable.

But believe what you want..... but if you have been around BMW for a few years, you'll know what I am talking about.

cheers,

beewang

[quote name='Ilyam5' date='Dec 30 2004, 04:00 PM']I still think it will piss off many 745 and 545 customers. Especially 545 wasn't out long enough to get a major remake (367hp is what I hear, torque is not going up much), but still
Every manufacturer is the same - They always strive to improve their range.

I would of had a 535d if it was available when I bought mine!

And SPORT spec too

Here is something that I found:

From one of our blogs on posted on 12/23

Ok, went to the BMW dealership today with my dad to pick up his new 645ci (which is seriously cool btw) and the salesperson (who i've known for 15 years) had a file from BMW with all the details of the new refresh. This is for the UK but it will be pritty much the same worldwide:

-The 745i will become the 750i with the engine upgraded from 333bhp to 363bhp and 4.8 litres from 4.4 (Is that the same engine as the X5 4.8?)

-The 735i will become a 740-with an upgraded engine (cant recall to what size-I think it war roughtly a 10% increace in power)

-There are changes to the front and the back of the exterior. "Touch points" are enhanced (eg steering wheel) Interior also revised with changes to I-drive (but not the simplified version as in the 5/6)

-In the UK dynamic drive moves from standard to optional and heated front seats, glass sunroof and a new style of 18 inch wheels become standard equipment.

-Sadly there were no pitures-just descriptions of the changes-aparently these will be shown at the official press release on the 28th January (in UK anyways)

-There will be an increace in price of ?700 odd (in the UK anyway) on the new models.

-First delievrys in UK for very late April/Early May!

Hope this helps. I will be proved right on the 28th so you can all thank me then lol. Cant wait, love BMW's!

It happend to me too! 535d came out just when I got my 530d. I just test drove one 535d and I was not so impressed, maybe because of auto box. It has to be manual to me. So I don't feel so bad anymore.

If I was disapointed with the preformance of the 545, I might be a bit upset by this news.
But I'm not, the 4.5 L motor is more then enough for me, for my style of driving.
I don't believe more would be better, just newer ( accompanied by new engine bugs if any ).

I agree with Beewang, I still think it's a couple of years away, if at all.
The 3.0 and 2.5 surely need the update to compete , and the added power will be well recieved.
But if you don't add torque , HP increases aren't so stuning .
