I'd be more cautious launching with an automatic.

Just wondered if any of you guys have ever launched your autos, I have never done it but to be honest i am not sure i will ever do it. Diesels are very torquey so it may do some serious damage to the box.
I have launched mine on a few occassions. It is not something that I would recommend doing frequently due to the extra load on the transmission but it's fine every once in a while.

My technique (for a Steptronic).

1. Apply full braking.

2. DSC/DTC off (hold button down for about 4-5 seconds)

3. Turn off AC

4. Shift into M1

5. Floor the accelerator

6. Release the brake once the engine revs high and keep the accelerator floored.

7. Enjoy

My Ride: 2010 BMW 530i E61, alpine white, cream-beige interior, sports-auto-transmission and a lot more-

FYI: 525D with 2497ccm? ,177hp has 400Nm torque at 2000 turns/minute.

I launched my car several times without braking things.
It makes a lotta fun. Try it:
disable DTC,
hold down brake, floor the gas pedal and let the brake go when the engine revs enough.
I love it when a crappy V dub GOlf 2/3 driver stands beside me at the traffic light.
BTW: I kick ass almost every car with this method at the traffic light, but only the first 100-200meters

Edit:sdg1871 was faster

Don't y'all find that by trying to launch with DSC off you're just sat there burning up rubber? If the intention of the launch is to show off, then cool. But if it's to get a great start (e.g. for a 0-60 time or 1/4m time) then it's not all that suitable.

That's right, but unless you have a tiny bit of wheelspin on launch you're not going to get the best possible time.

That's what I get with DSC on or DTC on, a half-second squeak of traction loss.

I was going to quote the 400Nm figure but the figure that was quoted by Krozi for the 545 was in Ft lbs so i quoted the 295ft lbs figure. I should have indicated this, apologies i wasnt clear.

Thanks for all the replies, I will need to give it a try sometime when i am feeling brave.

You might find, as I did, that at 1,000 rpm (which might seem low) you start to feel a bit uncomfortable about what you might be doing to your car with your foot on the brake. I certainly don't ever plan to try it with more than 1k rpm.

I guess it comes down to do you have a spare ?1-2K if you break the autobox, I dont at the moment so I might not try it.
