I had the 4.8 engine in my E53 X5 4.8is and BMW and I ended up settling on a trade to a new car where they covered most of the change over. No idea why, but it pinged and bogged down as the software learning constantly had it in a high gear ratio (eg around a round-a-bout in 4th/5th gear) to the point where it was near undriveable.

I selected a 540 M Sport to get the most powerful engine without going to the highest end (eg 550 or M5), as our traffic can be very stop start. Great if you have open roads to have a big V8, as they need to rev I've found. I've still got approx 310hp in the 540 and it is soooooooo smooth to drive ....I love it.

Cheers

Thanks again for your replies,

I did read, although can't remember where, that the newer 4.8 is very simelar to the 4.4, this is why you can see i'm concerned. I want my new purchase to be my 3rd time lucky and nothing else!!! The Jan '05 on 3.0i's have an increased BHP, 258 I think in the 5 series. I think the 6 series has even more from the "same" engine! But this output would probably suit my needs ok.

I've heard that some other owners of cars with new engines like the 2006 523i, have also been complaining of strange engine noises- not the same as the valvetronic tapping but something other. My Service manager at my main dealer has said this. He thinks some of it has to do with modern technology with lower and lower emmisions, but who knows.

These issues do seem odd, and a shame if they spoil your driving pleasure, especially if they may not actually be detrimental!

How different is the 4.4 V8 to the 4.8 V8 Valvetronic ???

Andy545 here was very helpful on the issue below, and I had contacted him because here was one of the few places this slightly odd engine noise was discussed which caused me concern in my last two cars. Andy had had his engine replaced because of the problem.

Having had a number of 7 Series cars I am now planning to buy a 5. I've had to sell my last (two actually) 745i's because of a tapping noise I didn't like/couldn't live with. Both cars were built mid to late 2004 and I have a feeling there may have been a suspect batch of intermediate levers fitted in the valvetronic system on both my cars- info I gained here. BMW were however not keen to help resolve the problem and perhaps rightly these noises may well have not posed any real problem. I just didn't like the noisy sound which remained at least half an hour into driving.

I'm mostly considereing a 530 petrol now to get away from the V8's but I am travelling to an auction in the UK next week which is all BMW (direct from BMW) ex contract hire and finance reposessed cars. The cars are mostly low mileage and still under thier manufacturers warranty.

There is however a couple of 550i M Sports which I know will be tempting!!!

I'm just totally unsure of the 4.8l V8 as I think it's pretty simelar to the N62 4.4 I believe it's now called the N62N (the4.8)

This issue caused me so much unnecessary stress that I might be best to stay away from the V8, but it seems a shame if there was little doubt the new engine would be fine!

Anyone got any input or advice for me??

Many Thanks for reading this long post.
I purchased a CPO 545i with 43 K on it. With in the first week I noticed the tapping. My complaint to the SA was for the first 20 minutes of driving and normal acceleration I hear a metalic tapping noise. They had the car 7 days, removed the valve covers and heads. But the repot back was that the levers measured out ok. It is still happening. I figure I paid top dollar for a CPO vehicle and this one doesn't sound like one. To me it sounds like a worn out car with 200K on it when I start out in the morning. Car has rough idle as well even when warm.

Iam going to take it back to the dealer as sometimes I thinkthey do try and measure how important it is to me by the number I times I complain about it. Love the the 545i, but can't stand to hear that tapping noise. If only mine ran as smooth as my wife's 330i.

When I first got mine, it tapped a bit in the morning. That last for less than a week, and I haven't heard it since.

My 545 used to ping in startup and then go away when the engine warmed up. Now with the 550, there no more pinging on startup. Engine is very quiet now. What is more noticeable is the exhaust note on startup.......Vroom!!! Love it!!!
