if you are not an experienced rider your first bike should not be a 600cc sportbike. you need to get some old 250cc and go through your hard knocks phase on that. make no mistake you will crash it eventually. a bike capable of 140 mph is not something to learn on, and stay away from traffic for the first 10k miles.
I'm of the same mentality. My first bike was a Yamaha FZR 400 and during the "learning" phase I dropped it a few times. Before moving up to an FZR 600 I tricked out my 400 with Yoshimura pipe, 3 point valve job, Dyno kit, racing chain, fox gas shocks, braided brake lines etc etc etc. By the end of it I had it running and beating most 600's in my path. 10 years later, I've given up bikes but I've been anxious to get another ever since.

My last bike was a BMW K1.

But no MC's for me anymore.
Did ride for some 20 years and that's enough.

I just got rid of my R6, certianly the best of the 600cc bikes I have owned. I got rid of my GSXR750 for it as the GSXR was too bulky in my opinion. You can throw around an R6 like a bmx bike, hadles and corners like nothing else, and will lots of available power of course.

Honestly, riding a motorcycle in LA area is not worth it. I used to ride and had two R6s, one a track bike and the other for street and needless to say I got rid of the one for street. Had three friends die and many others who got seriously hurt, some their fault, others because of a bad decisions from a driver. I eventually got rid of my track bike because I wasn't using it enough and can honestly say I miss riding but I don't miss the many times I avoided being ran over by some idiot.

Unless you plan to go to trackdays where its A LOT safer, its not worth the risk.

i've been riding since 1993 and started on a honda hurricane 600. over the years i went through a few bikes all the way up to 1000cc. They're great and tons of fun, but the best advice i can give you is not to get one. if you do, you will eventually go down. I have had many friends seriously injured and even pass away. good luck and be safe

Haha!! Now THAT, is a bike!! Can't kill yourself on that!!Well, probably could, but you'd have to have been doing something rather special to achieve that outcome!

I have 2 Kawasaki 636's. Love them. I sold my 1000...Got in too much trouble, lol. Take the classes, and don't waste your money on a 250 or 500 as you will outgrow those in 1-2 months. That's my 2 cents. I started out with a 2000 ZX6r 10 years ago and never looked back. Go for a 600 but just remember to respect it.
