I have an inline 6 523i and the battery is in the boot. The receptacle with the red plastic cover in the engine bay is just a terminal for jump starting the car.
All E60's have the battery in the trunk, only the + and - poles in the engine bay for jump starting the car.

Curious, does the 550i locate the battery in the trunk like my bro's 740il? The 535 is under the hood so that could be part of the difference
My apologies gentlemen, and I stand corrected. I had glanced at the red "terminal" under the hood and thought the battery was right below it too! So much for my mechanical prowess . Funny I had been checking out the trunk area and didn't really think a battery coud fit behind either side panel. I had an '01 Lincoln LS with a battery in the trunk and it was next to the tire in the spare tire well. So, at the risk of assuming again , our batteries must be the sealed top with vent hose type? Just for peace of mind I'd like to check the vent hose to make sure it is propery connected and not kinked, i.e., venting to outside air properly.

elyk, do they put a lot of salt on the roads up there in Toronto? Sheesh! You'd better get that salt washed out of your engine bay before stuff starts corroding.
